OpenAI has appointed Sheeladitya Mohanty as the Marketing Lead for India as part of its broader strategic expansion in the country. The company plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year, which will establish a formal presence in India, its second-largest market by user numbers. The country has emerged as a focus for OpenAI because of its fast-growing user base, which includes the highest population of student users of ChatGPT. The number of weekly active users in India has increased fourfold in the last year.
Mohanty brings in over 15 years of experience from Meta, Microsoft, and Nokia. He was early in the marketing of Meta’s AI products in the Asia-Pacific region and was essential in the rebranding of the company in India. Mohanty will lead marketing OpenAI’s initiatives aimed at increasing and ensuring the responsible use, education, and adoption of products-focused in India.
OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman considers India capable of leading the AI sector on the global stage due to the nation’s exceptional engineering and technology talent, a well-established AI developer ecosystem, and supportive government initiatives like the IndiaAI Mission. OpenAI is looking to proactively develop India-specific products and work with government agencies, corporations, and educational bodies. To foster a local team, the company has initiated hiring and announced local events focused on education and development to further engagement.
