Following the recent ban on 25 OTT platforms by the Indian government, including ALTT (formerly ALTBalaji), Ekta Kapoor took to the media to clarify her association with the platform amid widespread reports linking her to the banned apps.
Ekta Kapoor firmly stated that neither she nor her mother, Shobha Kapoor, have had any connection with ALTT since June 2021. She explained that she stepped away from the platform at that time. Since then, ALTT has been operated independently by Balaji Telefilms. This change was formalized through a corporate merger in June 2025, confirming that management and operational control of ALTT no longer involve Ekta or Shobha Kapoor in any capacity.
She emphasized that the government’s ban targeted platforms for hosting content considered vulgar, obscene, or violating India’s IT and decency laws. Ekta clarified that the crackdown on ALTT and others stems purely from regulatory compliance issues and is directed at the companies themselves, not individuals.
In her statement, Ekta urged the media and the public to report accurately, making clear that she bears no responsibility for the content or operations of ALTT after her disassociation in 2021.
This clarification comes amidst increasing scrutiny of OTT platforms in India as authorities work to curb easy access to explicit content, especially for minors. Ekta Kapoor’s response helps separate her personal brand and legacy from the regulatory actions taken against ALTT, reinforcing that she is not involved in the platform’s current ownership or management.
