Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has officially unveiled Sony VIZHA, its new Tamil general entertainment channel (GEC), marking the broadcaster’s entry into the Tamil television market with an October 2026 launch.
The channel was announced on Independence Day (August 15, 2026) through a symbolic rendition of the Tamil state anthem Tamizh Thai Vaazhthu performed by children, alongside the reveal of the channel’s name and logo. “Vizha” means celebration or festival in Tamil, a choice that reflects SPNI’s positioning of the channel as a celebration of Tamil stories, talent, music, family, aspiration and popular entertainment.
According to SPNI, Sony VIZHA will bring together original fiction series, international reality formats, films and tentpole entertainment events across both television and digital platforms, designed to resonate with Tamil households while aiming for broader appeal. The network has already secured uplinking and downlinking permissions for both Sony VIZHA and Sony VIZHA HD from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, clearing a key regulatory hurdle ahead of launch.
As part of its initial programming push, SPNI has lined up high-profile non-fiction formats for the channel, including Celebrity MasterChef Tamil, hosted by actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and Tamil Idol, the first Tamil adaptation of the global singing competition format, with music legend A.R. Rahman associated with the show. These titles sit alongside SPNI’s wider regional and Hindi slate, which includes new seasons of flagship properties and celebrity-led shows across the network.
Rajaraman Sundaram, chief content officer – South Regional – Sony Pictures Networks India, said “With Sony VIZHA, we are taking a heartfelt step into Tamil entertainment. This is a market with a rich creative legacy, a deeply expressive language and audiences who have always embraced stories with emotion, honesty and cultural pride. We come into this space with humility, respect and a sincere desire to add something meaningful. Our hope is to build premium stories that feel close to home while reflecting the confidence and curiosity of a new generation of Tamil viewers – sharper, faster, funnier, and unafraid to look beyond the four walls of the home. At the same time, we want to bring these stories to life with the scale, craft and ambition that can help them travel further. Tamizh Thai Vaazhthu beautifully speaks of Tamil’s pride spreading in every direction. That sentiment inspires Sony VIZHA – a celebration of Tamil culture, deeply rooted in emotion and imagined for a wider world. We reveal the name and logo today with gratitude and look forward to bringing the channel to audiences in October.”
With the Tamil GEC space seeing renewed interest from broadcasters and OTT platforms, Sony VIZHA is being positioned not just as a new channel but as part of SPNI’s larger regional strategy, which also includes a push into regional film rights and cross-platform content. Detailed programming schedules, distribution partners and exact launch date within October are expected to be announced closer to the go-live window.
